SLS Ceramics is now in Saltburn!

I’m thrilled to share some big news—SLS Ceramics now has a new home in the beautiful coastal town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea!

As many of you know, my work is inspired by the Yorkshire coastline, its textures, colours, and wildlife. So when the opportunity came to stock my ceramics in a shop in Saltburn, it felt like the perfect fit.

Creation Saltburn is a beautiful space filled with handcrafted goods by talented local makers. I’m really proud to be among them.

If you’re in or near Saltburn, I’d love for you to pop in and take a look.

It’s been a while

Thinking about undersea ‘treasures’ that wash up on the shoreline, like tiny pieces of glass, shell, pottery etc got me wondering about the effects of the sea on undiscovered items on the ocean floor.

I looked up images of bottles that have been found on shipwrecks etc, as well as the effect of the sea on wood and other organic material.

Pairing this with my love of all things Rock pools and fossils I came up with some new ceramic ideas.

‘Full Circle’

New direction

This is a quick post about my new work. Using pieces of pottery and sea glass found in fields and by rivers and beaches I can now incorporate these into my ceramics.

It’s all about a journey, for the pieces that I have found, and for me, as I take memories of collecting and finding and use them in the work I’m creating today.

For more details visit my full circle page.

New pieces

So, this is one of my first pieces. I choose a bottle design and carved into the clay to represent the movement of water and selected glazes to represent the colours of land and sea. Choosing the pieces of pottery and glass is the fun part, creating a finished item that I’m really happy with.

Big Fish

Really happy with my latest piece and he’s much bigger than my usual work, about 17cm long!

I really enjoyed making him, so I might build some other slightly larger sculptures in the future…who knows.

It was super easy to glaze too, 3 coats of Tangelo Celedon and some underglaze on the eyes and mouth.

Re-launching my website

I had thought that I wouldn’t use my website this year. I had so little traffic and I wasn’t sure if it would be worthwhile maintaining it. I thought I would use Etsy instead to sell my work.

But after some thought, I realised that having my own place to talk about my work as well as somewhere to sell it was important to me. It’s not just about the sales; it’s about having a platform that reflects my brand and allows me to engage with my audience in a more personalised way.

I want to share the stories behind my creations, the inspiration that drives me, and the process of bringing my ideas to life. Having my own website gives me the freedom to showcase my artistry and craftsmanship in a way that’s uniquely mine.

Furthermore, by having my own website, I can establish a stronger online presence and build a sense of credibility and professionalism. It’s a digital storefront that makes it easier for potential customers to find and connect with me.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been adding my newest pieces to the site. It’s taking a bit of time because I want to make sure everything’s working as it should.

I will put the site live in the next few days (hopefully!) and I hope you like it.

Hello 2024!

It’s been a very long time since my last blog post. 2023 was a very strange and sometimes difficult year and perhaps 2024 will be a new start.

My pottery plan is to try and be more careful and less clumsy! The number of pieces of work I have damaged while transporting them from my work station to the kiln shelf or from my house to the studio and everywhere in between, doesn’t bear thinking about. So, more care and more bubblewrap will mean less breakages, fingers crossed.

My other pottery plan is to not be lazy when it comes to finishing and glazing – I can be a bit slap dash when at the end stages of my work. So, I will also be trying to take more care when I feel my piece is finished, for example when applying wax, colour and glaze. In the long run, this should mean I’m happier with more of my work when it finally emerges from the kiln.

Luna

It’s been four weeks since my beautiful Labrador Luna passed away. It’s only over the last few days that I’ve been able to look at photos and videos of her. It still hurts a lot and we all miss her so much. She was such an amazing dog and she has left a giant hole in our lives.
